SHAPING THE FUTURE OF PACKAGING DESIGN

Could this be Europe’s most exciting competition in packaging design? Packaging Impact Design Award (PIDA) is arranged annually by BillerudKorsnäs in cooperation with leading universities in France, Germany, Spain and Sweden. Up to 200 future packaging designers participate in PIDA every year.

“The theme of PIDA 2013 is Food For Thought, which aims to increase awareness about how packaging design can make a difference for the environment. The challenge for the competitors involves the choice of packaging material and the creation of a design concept that can contribute to reducing food waste,” explains Agneta Rognli, Manager Marketing Communication, BillerudKorsnäs.

BillerudKorsnäs is a knowledge resource and leading provider of packaging material and solutions. With this competition, the company wants to strengthen bonds between schools and businesses, but also help shape a sustainable future by promoting knowledge development in the industry.
This is why PIDA is an initiative that benefits both the industry and the future packaging designers.

It is a way for BillerudKorsnäs to show the way and take responsibility for the quality and progress of the packaging design profession.

PIDA has become an integral part of the curriculum of the university programmes. Students and teachers are kept updated on what the industry demands, while industry professionals get inspiration, new ideas and insights into the thinking of a new generation designers. This way, PIDA has evolved into an important forum for the whole industry. The PIDA event is a meeting place for manufacturers, converters, tradepress, brand owners and established packaging designers. Students get an opportunity to meet potential future employers and experienced designers – as well as have their designs assessed by a jury of industry professionals.

“Packaging design is a complex area of expertise,” says Agneta Rognli. “There are many demands to meet: a package has to be functional, user friendly, selling, protective, informative, climate smart and rational. BillerudKorsnäs is more than a supplier of packaging material, we are a source of expertise for customers and designers who want to improve their output and processes. That’s why we have to be on the leading edge and drive development together with young, talented designers. Cartonboard is an exciting and sometimes tough challenge for packaging designers, and that’s where we contribute with training and consultations to share knowledge about the material.”

The latest event was PIDA Sweden 2013, which took place in Stockholm in mid October. There it showed, once again, that the interest in PIDA is growing steadily. More entries for nomination to the competition, higher quality in terms of project execution and an increasing number of industry professionals who wish to play an active part, as keynote speakers or members of the jury. The next PIDA event will take place in Germany early 2014, to be followed by PIDA France in spring and PIDA Sweden in the autumn.
