With this achievement, Klabin has become the biggest winner of the award, with a total of 11 Onda Verde trophies, since 1998
Klabin, the leading manufacturer of packaging paper and board, corrugated boxes and industrial sacks in Brazil, won the 18thExpressão Ecology Award in the category of Environmental Management, with the case: Biodiversity at Klabin. With this achievement, Klabin has become the biggest winner in the history of the Award, thanks to its initiatives in sustainability and environmental responsibility.
Presentation of the awards was made at the 2011 Sustainable Management Forum, an event held at the headquarters of FIESC (Santa Catarina Federation of Industry), in Florianopolis. On the occasion, Klabin received its 11th Onda Verde Trophy.
“The conquest of this 11th trophy in recognition ofour environmental practices in the forestry areas of Parana and Santa Catarina attests to our ongoing pursuit of sustainability throughout the production chain”, comments Jose Totti, the Director of Klabin’s Forestry Business Unit.
Conservation of biodiversity is one of Klabin’s practices of environmental responsibility and is stipulated in its Sustainability Policy. Results achieved by Klabin in this field have been made possible by the adoption of a forest stewardship system in a mosaic pattern, which interminglesthe areas of native woodlands and plantations of pines and eucalyptus. As a consequence, suitable habitats for both fauna and flora are ensured and consistent quality of the water and equilibrium of the ecosystem are safeguarded.
In the forested areas of the Telemaco Borba plant (PR) alone, some 729 species of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish have been identified. Of this total 27 are listed as endangered animals by Ibama (Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources).
In addition, several integrated actions are run producing excellent results, such as the Program to Monitor Hydrographic Basins, the Program for Environmental Recuperation, Environmental Education, the Apiculture and Meliponiculture Program, the Ecological Park and the Araucaria Trail, the Wild Animal Scientific Breeding Grounds, the Survey of Birdlife and Amphibians, the Puma Project, Control of Solid Wastes, the Museum of Fauna and Flora and the Phytotherapy Program.
