Coster: Moving closer to customers

A seminar entitled “Aerosols in Pharmaceutics and Cosmetics: The Situation Today” was held last October 26th under the auspices of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Barcelona.
The event took place at the offices of the “Instituto de Formación Continua” (Continuing Education Institute), with the directors and managers responsible for the Labs, R&D and Quality Control at the principal pharmaceutical laboratories in Barcelona and the surrounding area in attendance. Among the firms represented were Ferrer, Genesse, Grifols, Kern, Kern Pharma, Laboratorios Quintòn and Làcer Research.

Professor Josep Maria Sunyè, Director of SDM (Servei de Desenvolupament del Medicament) at Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Barcelona presided over the opening ceremony. Professor Sunyè welcomed the audience and presented the seminar agenda before handing over to Mr. Joan Portùs, Director of Costertec S.A.

Joan Portùs’s presentation focused on the history of aerosols from their first appearance to their current distribution in the Spanish market, broken down according to the type of application.

Following up, Mr. Ramón Vila, Technical Director at Costertec, directed attention to the requirements necessary for the correct development of an aerosol product, with particular attention paid to the various components (actuators, valves, alluminium bags, chemical formulas and propellants).

Bianca Cavalli, Sales & Marketing Manager Coster Pharma, then presented a number of new applications in the pharmceutical sector that use BOV (Bag-On-Valve) technology to guarantee a perfect separation of the product from the propellant (including compressed air); BOV aerosols function perfectly even when held upside down or sideways.

A. Raineri (Coster Quality Assurance Manager) and E. Pagani (Project Manager Coster) presided over the afternoon session and presented the new ISO 15378:2006 standard, issued specifically for companies that produce packaging components for medicines. They highlighted the concept of Clean Room production in particular (ISO 7 / ISO 8).

During the day a number of videos were shown illustrating filling machines suitable for pharmaceutical and cosmetics products, both liquid (oral and nasal sprays) and aerosol (inhalers for asthma, sprays for topical use, BOV).

Initiatives of this kind improve relations between the world of packaging and the pharmaceutical industry.
